Honored for 35 years of service to SF State's Black/ Africana Studies Department

Dr. Laura Head graduated from San Francisco State College with a B.A. in psychology and then earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan. She returned to San Francisco State University and began teaching in the Black Studies department. She currently teaches courses related to Black people in the United States specifically related to psychology, children, family, women and racism.

Dr, Head’s has been supportive of numerous organizations and activities on the SFSU campus including serving as faculty advisor to the Associated Students, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the Black Student Union and the Feminist Majority organization. She has also spoken at various campus activities sponsored by the Educational Opportunity Program, the Summer Youth Sports Program, the Afrikan Residence Association, the New Faculty Orientation program and others.

Dr. Head’s community involvement has included serving on the boards of some local non-profit organizations including the Marin City Multi Service Center, the Oakland Men’s Project, the California Parents for Educational Choice and others. She was an active speaker against Proposition 29 which attacked Affirmative action in California and for Proposition 209 which supported school vouchers. She was admired by her students and well-regarded in Bay Area communities.
